WINTER SPLIT REGIONAL 1 - DAYS 3 AND 4 PREDICTION

November 28, 2020

So, today is day 3 of the Winter Split Regional 1 of NA and I will analyze the brackets we have in this moment and make a prediction on who is going to take it all on championship day which is tomorrow.

I am going to start with the upper bracket in which we have the following teams: Version1, Rogue, G2, eUnited, Ghost, Alpine, Envy and the Knights.

The first game is Version 1 vs Rogue. Both teams did a drastic roster change after the Fall split. V1 added Comm in place of AxB and Rogue replaced Kronovi with Taroco. We have a very experienced team vs a very young one. But in the end I think that what is going to cause a difference in this series is the solo plays, which Rogue has in their favor having one of the best mechanical players in Firstkiller and a runner up in Turinturo. So my guess for this series is 3-1 in favor of Rogue.

The second game is G2 vs eUnited. This is going to be pretty straightforward. G2 will SWEEP eUnited. During day 1 of the regional and during The Grid 2 weeks ago we have seen a G2 that dominated almost every team, knocking out Team Envy and just falling short in a game 7 against NRG. In the other hand, we have a very inexperienced team with 2 of their 3 players having their debut just last split. And this lack of experience is what is going to cost eUnited the series.

Third game is Ghost vs Alpine. No one expected Ghost to be here while Alpine has shown they can be consistent with their play. But since Ghost beat NRG and have shown they can have really good series, I have them taking this match in 5 games. But honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m wrong because this team has shown they are not consistent at all. While Percy, Majicbear and Jordan have been toe to toe with the best in NA.

Fourth game is Team Envy vs Pittsburgh Knights. This series is going to be very similar to the G2 one. Team Envy is going to show that experience that PK lacks and their team plays will take them to the win. Also, PK just did a roster move so they probably still don’t have the chemistry, which can be important factor that could even define the match. So this is a sweep for Team Envy.

Next games are the winners semifinals. These matches are based on my predictions for the first 4 series of the day. Which means they are completely hypothetical.

Game 1 is G2 vs Rogue. This is a matchup we have seen several times during the Fall Split and the Grid, and Rogue still haven’t managed to show they can beat G2 play style. While G2 have won against them multiple times and may of them were complete dominations. So I have G2 taking this matchup 4-1 games.

Game 2 is Ghost Gaming vs Team Envy. They faced each other during the Grid a couple of times when Ghost was omelette and they had Luke instead of Mectos when after a very promising offseason, they didn’t step up their game and failed to compete against top teams. Now with the roster change things might take a different path, but certainly you don’t want to start experiencing with Envy. So I have Envy taking the series 4-0.

My winners finals is G2 vs Envy. This will be a very entertaining series between 2 of the Big 4 of NA. Last split G2 failed to perform on championship day while Envy won Fall Regional 3. It will all come down to how G2 performs. If they show up then they can win easily. But I’m not confident in that. Still, I have G2 winning in 6 games.

Now we will go down to the lower bracket where again, all will be hypothetical since these matches all depend on winners quarterfinals.

First series will be eUnited vs NRG. No one expected NRG to be in lowers so early in the tournament, some never expected them to drop a game, but here they are, one more loss and they are out. Fortunately for them, they are facing a team really similar to them, 2 players with insane mechanics in each team which are jstn and Squishy for NRG and Wonda and Tristn for eU. Plus the brain of the team in Garret and Ayjacks. In the end, experience will decide this matchup but I think it will be close. So NRG takes it in 5.

Next series is Version1 against Kansas City Pioneers. Another team no one expected to see this early in the lower bracket. This is going to be a entertaining series to watch in which team chemistry may play a huge role. And KCP clearly wins that so I have them taking the series in 5 games.

Third game is PK vs SSG. For everyone’s surprise, SSG lost their first matchup and dropped to the lower bracket. And unfortunately for PK, they have to face the reigning champions of NA. Even though SSG is not in their best moment, their players solo plays capacity is enough for them to win. So I predict a 3-1 win for SSG.

The final game for losers round 3 is Alpine vs Soniqs. The Soniqs are playing their best rocket league in a long time and they demonstrated it when they defeated The Peeps. So I have them taking the series in 4 games, but again, I wouldn’t be surprised if Alpine takes it because they are more than capable.

Starting the next round we have NRG vs KCP. This is a very tough matchup to predict since both teams are not in their best moment and have shown that can beat each other in multiple occasions. I have this series going all the way to 5 games and NRG taking the series. This because they have shown that they are able to win decisive games, doing this just 2 weeks ago during the grid when they won 2 consecutive game 7s against SSG and G2. And to be honest, I don’t see KCP beating NRG this weekend.

Second game is SSG vs Soniqs. Space Station had trouble last week with XSET, winning 3-1 and all games went to OT. The Soniqs have a similar play style to XSET, so they might give competition to SSG. I see this game going to 5 games, but in this types of series, experience is a huge factor and it balances more towards Space Station. So I have them advancing to the next round.

Losers quarterfinals start with Ghost vs NRG. The rematch. Ghost relegated NRG to the lower bracket on day 1 of the tournament and they meet again. But this time the outcome will be different. NRG will be prepared to play against them and this time they won’t make all the mistakes they committed during the first series. So NRG will win 4-1 games.

Next game is Space Station vs Rogue. And I will be really straightforward with this game. If SSG continue playing how they played last weekend, they don’t stand a chance against Rogue. This Rogue team bases its offense in solo plays. So unless First and Turo are having a off day, they will take the series and my prediction is that they will do it in 6 games.

The next round will only have the matchup between NRG and Rogue. To be honest, I don’t see a way in which Rogue can defeat NRG. This is the furthest they have come in RLCS, a top 4 finish, something they couldn’t accomplish last split. This series is going to be a close one, but NRG will take it in 7.

To finish this lower bracket, we have the matchup between Envy and NRG. And unless NRG get in peak form and play out of their minds like in Fall Split Regional 2, Envy is going to take the series. The main factor here is going to be the mind of the players, and this time Envy wins in this category. Mainly because they have only played 1 series while NRG will be entering their 3rd and have almost no break between the second and this one. So Envy will be more fresh and will take the series in 7 games.

Finally, my grand final is G2 vs Envy. And as I already said before, this all comes down on if G2 will show up. Envy is a very consistent team so we can expect them to play good. But G2 is not the same. But let’s not forget that Envy will have to win 2 bo7 to win the regional, something I don’t see happening. So my prediction is that G2 is taking it all this Regional and beating Envy in 7 games during the first series.

Now we just have to wait until later today to see if my predictions were accurate or extremely inaccurate. Let’s hope we see some great games and that the best team wins.
